Eat A Piece Of Gum
Consider snacking on a piece of gum after you eat when you can't brush. Chewing gum is helpful for a number of reasons. First, chewing gum naturally promotes the production of saliva in your mouth. Saliva is a natural effective tool for keeping your mouth, teeth and gums clean because it helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
Second, if the gum contains xylitol instead of sugar, it can also help kill bacteria. It's estimated that xylitol can reduce the presence of bad bacteria in your mouth by as much as 75 percent. Overall, it's a healthier option when compared to gums that contain sugar.
Choose Your Meals Wisely
Make it a point to choose your meals wisely when you can't brush your teeth. In terms of your oral health, foods with high sugar levels contain the greatest threat so it's best to avoid these food selections. When you eat high sugar foods, the bacteria in your mouth produces an acid that can start to eat away at the tooth enamel, leading to cavities.
Removing any remnants from these foods is important. For example, instead of a cup of fresh fruit, try to replace it with nuts or hummus since they don't have as much sugar content. You can also replace the fruit with cheese, which is known to naturally promote saliva production. Save the fruit for a time when you can brush soon after.
Grab A Water Bottle
When you aren't able to brush, keep a bottle of water on hand. The reason for this is that water can help wash away any food particles or bacteria that may be left over in your mouth after you eat. If you do happen to consume a high sugar food, this can be especially helpful. When eating stain-producing foods like pasta sauce, drinking water immediately after can also lower the risk of staining.
Lastly, drinking water when you can't brush can also help keep your breath smelling better since much of the odor producing bacteria in your mouth will be washed away.
